Since it shows smudges so easily, stainless steel can seem incredibly challenging to clean. And to make matters worse, stainless steel comes with specific care and maintenance recommendations. Be sure to take your time to check out the manufacturer’s instructions before you start your little project. The more delicate stainless steel items may require special cleaning procedures.

However, there are a few natural cleaning methods that are safe and suitable for most of these finishes:

  • Use a soft cloth dampened with warm water for gentle surface cleaning. Make sure to wipe in the direction of the grain to avoid leaving streaks.
  • If that doesn’t work, and the fingertips and other smudges refuse to fade away, grab some distilled white vinegar. Apply distilled white vinegar with a microfiber cloth, and then rub in the direction of the grain. Repeat as many times as necessary.
  • If you’re dealing with sticky spots, caked-on dirt, or hard water stains, this is the time to call baking soda paste to the rescue. Simply mix baking soda and water to make a paste. Cover the spots in question with it, and scrub gently with a soft cloth going with the grain. Wipe up the debris with a paper towel, and continue buffing with baking soda until you get the desired results.
  • To polish your stainless steel, first wipe it down with distilled white vinegar in the direction of the grain. Next, dab your cloth in a tiny bit of olive oil and gently rub it into the stainless steel surfaces, making sure to move your cloth along the grain again. Buff until your appliances are beautifully glossy and shiny — but don’t overdo it with the oil. The surface should not feel greasy when you touch it.

What should you not use on stainless steel?

If you don’t want to risk damaging your stainless steel appliances, be mindful of the following:

  • Steel wool or brushes will scratch the surface of your stainless steel and consequently, make it more susceptible to rusting and staining.
  • Abrasive cleaners will do equal damage, and they will dull the finish.
  • Bleach and cleaners with chlorine are stainless steel’s worst enemies, as they damage it and make it tarnish.
  • Never leave dirty water and cleaning solution residues to dry on your stainless steel. You will only end up with a dull finish and permanent blemishes on your beloved appliances.
  • Some tap water may be too harsh as it may leave spots or stains whenever it touches the stainless steel surface. Instead, use distilled or filtered water.
