At Checklist Maids, we often receive requests from the awesome people who welcome us into their homes, to help them not just clean, but declutter. We’re no Marie Kondo (although we do have a great contact who is KonMari Method™ certified), but we do take the time to organize and provide insight on doing so when needed.
So we’ve started a mini-series on just that- Resetting Your Home. Because when your home is clean and decluttered, you tend to feel better too. So here you go-
Tip 1: Gain Confidence by Starting Small: Declutter One Drawer Today
The spot you zero in on is totally up to you—and it really doesn’t need to be a drawer at all. You can target any cabinet, basket, bin, or cubby, as long as it’s small and manageable. We don’t want you to feel overwhelmed, we want you to feel empowered.
Here’s a quick list of steps once you’ve picked your space to tackle:
- Take everything out of the drawer and empty it onto a surface.
- Clean the drawer while it’s empty. It’s a deep drawer or a cabinet, we recommend vacuuming it out and then wet wiping it.
- Sort through everything, looking for things to recycle, throw away, or move to another space (in your home, or to a friend, or donation center).
- Once sorted, put the items you’ve decided to keep back, keeping like items together. If you have them, use drawer dividers or organizers, they make a BIG difference!
Practices like this can be fast and easy. Depending on what you’re sorting, you might find yourself going down memory lane, but try to set your timer for 10-20 minutes max. This way you’ll stay focused. As a general rule, if you haven’t used an item in the past year, you likely never will so give it away! Let someone else make great use of it. The point is to make space and make your home more organized and enjoyable, even if it’s one drawer at a time.
