Regular sweeping, mopping and wiping are among the key tasks included in your list of chores, but there is an important item to add to a more comprehensive house cleaning checklist for your home in Jamaica, NY: regular deep cleaning of your essential kitchen appliances.

This is crucial not only because you want to maintain a high standard of hygiene in your living space and prevent germs from spreading, but also because you want to extend life and boost efficiency of your appliances. Accumulated grime can have a detrimental effect on both of these.

So what can you do for your kitchen appliances?

Read on!

How do you deep clean 4 major kitchen appliances?

Adding deep cleaning of your kitchen appliances to your cleaning routine might seem like an additional burden, but it’s an investment of time and effort that definitely pays off. Preparing meals will be more enjoyable when your stovetop is spotless and stain-free. You won’t have to worry about being splashed with strange odors coming from your dishwasher or the fridge, and the smoke from the oven will not compromise the aesthetics of your ceiling, walls or cabinets.

Regular cleaning and maintenance will help keep your appliances running smoothly and your kitchen looking beautiful much longer. Here are some regular deep-cleaning projects that can do wonders for your kitchen!

How to clean your gas stovetop

We all know how greasy a gas stovetop can get unless you take care of it as soon as possible. Make sure to wipe it after every use. A more detailed scrub is required at least once a week. Here is what it includes:

  • Start with the grates and burner heads and caps. Remove them and put them in your sink or bathtub, depending on their size. Make your cleaning solution with two parts of baking soda and one part of vinegar. Apply the solution and let it sit for half an hour. Then, scrub with a non-abrasive sponge or toothbrush. For clogged port openings, you can use a paperclip gently, making sure not to damage the metal. Finally, rinse and dry entirely.
  • Now, let’s move on to the stovetop surface. First, wipe it down with a damp cloth to collect any food-remains. To eliminate the grease, use the vinegar and baking soda mixture you have already made. Give it twenty minutes to finish its job before scrubbing the surface with a non-abrasive sponge. Next, wipe off all the cleaning paste with a clean damp cloth. Finally, dry entirely before returning all parts to their original positions. What a job!
  • If you own a glass stovetop or an electric coil stovetop, you can still apply this magic duo (vinegar and baking soda). Just be mindful not to submerge burner coils into any liquid as it can damage them.

How to deep clean your ovenstove cleaning

This monthly deep cleaning routine will prevent all that smoke from coming out of your oven.

  • First, remove your oven racks. Next, make your wonderous cleaning agent: a baking soda paste (mix a 1/2 cup of baking soda with a few tablespoons of water to get a spreadable paste). Apply the paste all over the interior surfaces of your oven, steering clear of the heating elements. Let it sit for a while (it would be perfect overnight).
  • Attend to your oven racks. Set them in the tub without any water. Sprinkle baking soda and then douse them with white vinegar. Once the foaming stops, soak the racks in hot water. Leave them there for a while, and then scrub them with a scrub pad. For extra hardened gunk, a toothbrush is a great solution. Finally, rinse the racks entirely.
  • Now, go back to your oven. Wipe out the dried baking soda paste with a damp cloth. Spray a little vinegar over the baking soda residue. Wait for a few minutes, and then wipe and dry. Put your racks back, and you’re done!

How to deep clean your dishwasher

The dishwasher is probably one of the most frequently used appliances in the average household, so it can easily host thousands of hidden bacteria, germs, and food soil. Any time you notice your dishes aren’t clean when you take them out of the dishwasher, it’s a sign that you have neglected the appliance for too long. To get the most out of your dishwasher, you need to deep clean it regularly (probably once a month). Not only is the machine better-smelling and fresher-looking, but you’ll find it’s more effective.

First, place a dishwasher-safe cup full of white vinegar on an empty top rack. Run a full cycle with hot water. After this cycle, spread a cup of baking soda on the bottom of the tub and run a short hot-water cycle. Finally, leave the dishwasher open for some time to air it out.

How to deep clean your fridge

With a house full of people and kids, your fridge can get messy in no time, which is why it requires your constant attention: spot clean as needed and deep clean it every three months.

The deep-cleaning procedure might seem time-consuming as you need to take everything out. But it is a perfect moment to double-check the expiration dates of your food. Once you have dealt with your food supplies, apply a solution of warm water and baking soda (three parts baking soda and one part water). Wipe the shelves thoroughly (if necessary, remove the shelves and soak them in the sink with a mixture of vinegar and baking soda). If possible, pull the refrigerator away from the wall, and vacuum the dust and dirt that has accumulated over time. Finally, wipe its exterior with diluted white vinegar, and put everything back.

What to use to clean appliances?

When it comes to picking the right products for cleaning your kitchen appliances, the market offers numerous cleaning products. You just need to follow the application instructions, and protect yourself by wearing gloves, and ventilate the room as most of them can irritate your skin and eyes.

But, before you rush into a store to buy expensive cleaning products, look around your house, two mighty cleaning agents are probably already there: baking soda and white vinegar.

You can apply them separately (first white vinegar and the baking soda paste) or together, depending on the stubbornness of the stains you are dealing with. Baking soda paste is super-easy to make: just mix one part water and three parts baking soda.

If the smell of the white vinegar bothers you, there is a solution for this, too. Just add a few drops of your favorite essential oil into your white vinegar solution (50/50 water and white vinegar) and it’ll be gone.
