Carpet & Upholstery Disinfection 101

by checklistmaids - February 18, 2022

Carpet-Upholstery-DisinfectionCarpets and upholstery belong to high-touch surfaces. As such, they also need to be sanitized to prevent coronavirus and other invisible threats from thriving in your home. So, you recently learned how to disinfect your electronics and tend to your light switches. But, how can you keep your couch and carpets germ-free during these challenging times?

If you’re in doubt, your Covid-19 cleaning and disinfecting services are here to share some tips on how to disinfect your carpets and upholstery. Read on!

How can I disinfect my carpet at home?

Steam cleaning is the best way to sanitize carpets at home. This is because steam at high temperatures (212 °F or above) kills viruses and bacteria. Some people recommend mixing hot water and white vinegar for better results. Just make sure to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations regarding the entire process.

However, if you don’t have a steam cleaner at your disposal, you have these options:

  • You can choose an EPA-approved commercial product and follow the guidelines available on the label.
  • Or you can use 3% hydrogen peroxide. Since it can bleach your carpet, depending on its dye, apply it to an inconspicuous spot first. If it doesn’t change the color, you can spread it over the entire carpet. Leave it to air dry, and then sprinkle baking soda onto the carpet to eliminate unpleasant odors. Let it sit overnight and vacuum.

Pro tips

  • Since cleaning and disinfecting are two separate chores, make sure to vacuum your carpet first to get rid of dust and other dirt.
  • You don’t want to ruin your beloved carpets, so call experts to your rescue. They’ll know what harmless product and equipment they can use for certain kinds of fabric.

How can I disinfect my fabric couch?

Disinfecting your fabric couches should also be included in your home-sanitizing routine. For this purpose, the best option is a steam cleaner too. However, you can also buy a commercial product or grab some white vinegar.

The white vinegar procedure is following:

  1.  Mix equal parts white vinegar and water and add it to a spray bottle.
  2. Spot test first as some fabrics (such as acetate) are acid-sensitive.
  3. Spritz over the material carefully, but don’t soak it. Finally, let it air dry.
  4. If you aren’t a fan of the vinegar scent, add a few drops of natural essential oil. This way, you’ll have a beautiful fragrance permeating your room.

Is there a disinfectant spray for upholstery?

Different upholstery sprays available on the market boast incredible disinfecting properties. They promise to remove odor-causing bacteria while infusing fabrics with a fresh scent. But in practice, only a few of them can actually disinfect the material. They need to be handled with care because, if used incorrectly, their germ-killing power won’t come to the fore.

You need to opt for fabric disinfectant sprays with an EPA registration number. This number indicates that the product is certified as a disinfectant by the government. Also, make sure to read the instructions carefully, as the use of fabric-safe sprays varies. To sanitize the fabric, you should spray it evenly and allow it to stay moist for at least five minutes. In some cases, the spray is only suitable for sanitizing small areas.
